REGISTER ONLINE

INDIANAPOLIS - Beginning July 1, Indiana residents will gain the ability to register to vote online. Online Voter Registration will become the newest addition to www.indianavoters.com and will allow Indiana residents to submit a voter registration application electronically to the appropriate county voter registration office. Only Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oregon, Utah and Washington have previously offered online voter registration.

Indiana residents with a valid Indiana driver's license or Indiana state-issued identification card will be able to use this new tool to submit a new voter registration application or to update an existing voter registration record. Historically, voters have most commonly registered by mail using a paper-based application form or have registered in-person at a county voter registration office, the Indiana Election Division or a branch office of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Online Voter Registration is the result of legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2009 with bipartisan support that called for enhancements to the traditional paper-based registration system. States adopting an online voter registration option have seen a 60 to 70 percent shift away from paper-based registrations over time. A similar shift in Indiana would greatly reduce pressure on county election administrators to facilitate data entry, especially during peak times at the close of the vote registration period.

Applicants will be required to verify their voting eligibility and personal information, which will then be cross-referenced with databases from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Voters will instantly receive a confirmation of their application that they can print. Once confirmed online, the county's voter registration office will approve or reject registrations subject to the same criteria used for other applicants, such as residency or incarceration following conviction of a crime.

Indiana residents have until midnight on Monday, October 4, 2010 to register in order to participate in the November 2010 General Election.

PREPARING FOR THE HOLIDAY

PERU - The Indiana State Police would like to remind all motorists to do their part in making our highways safe during this upcoming holiday. Last year, two people were killed on Indiana roadways during the Independence Day driving period. To help ensure the safety of all motorists during this heavily traveled holiday, the Indiana State Police will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) from July 2 through July 4. Operation C.A.R.E. is a federally funded enforcement program that will allow approximately 150 additional troopers to patrol Indiana roadways over the holiday period.

Officers will also participate in the Statewide Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Project. Troopers will target impaired drivers, motorists who speed, follow too closely, make unsafe lane changes, or drive aggressively. Officers will have zero tolerance for violations of Indiana's child restraint and seat belt laws. Every occupant of a motor vehicle, including pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles are required to be secured in a seat belt or child safety seat. If a violation is observed a citation will be issued.

The Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division will have motor carrier inspectors and federally certified troopers working to enforce federal commercial motor vehicle safety regulations and Indiana laws as they pertain to commercial motor vehicles. They will be looking for log book violations which could indicate a driver is fatigued. They will also monitor roadways for unsafe commercial motor vehicles and equipment which endangers all motorists.

SUCCESSFUL CHECKPOINT

WHITE COUNTY - Last Saturday, the Law Enforcement Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, along with the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, Indiana Excise Police, and the White County Sheriff's Department conducted a multi-agency Motorboat Sobriety Checkpoint.

This checkpoint was in correlation of Operation Dry Water, which is a national effort to reduce the number of alcohol or drug related incidents on the water by increasing the number of checkpoints and increasing officer presence on the waterways. Through this checkpoint, authorities increase the awareness of the issues dealing with the use of alcohol and/or drugs while on the water.

The Motorboat Sobriety Checkpoint was a success, according to the D-N-R. Throughout the checkpoint, 38 boats were contacted and checked for alcohol consumption by the operator. There was one arrest for operating a motorboat while intoxicated, one citation written for expired registration, and another for insufficient personal flotation devices and one warning for failure to possess a Type 4 P-F-D. Throughout the duration of the checkpoint, occupants of the boats stated that they had heard about the checkpoint and made sure that they had a sober operator.
